The Art of Defense, 2015
This series seeks to explore the notion of armor and its many different meanings and uses. Physical body armor is used in battles to protect the body from harm, but aside from that obvious understanding, armor can also be one's defense mechanisms or social behaviors that protect the emotional self. An emotional defense mechanism is often deployed to protect the mind and vulnerable internal self in uncomfortable, threatening, or frightening situations. I intended to visually represent all different types of armors, shields, and protective mechanisms, but also sought to question why armors are used. When are they used to protect something valuable and treasured and when are they used to hide and cover up insecurities, emotional vulnerabilities, mental barriers, etc.. Similarly, I intended to make the statement that armors and defenses can sometimes be a bad thing and can bar you from getting to know yourself and others from getting to know you.
